Day trip from Florence Santa Maria Novella station to Pisa Centrale station is less than 1 hour train ride. A day at Pisa would be sufficient. Pisa was one of the four great maritime republics in the medieval times and
retains a good selection of monuments from that era. There's also the Arno River and several interesting museums. It's a good city for strolling by foot and enjoying at a leisurely pace manner.
