Domaine Escaravailles Wine Tasting - Rasteau, Provence, France

The Domaine des Escaravailles, owned by the family for three generations Ferran family, its name derived from the Occitan "Escaravay" which also means Beetle. This nickname was given to the Black Penitents of Avignon, owners at the time (Rasteau archives in 1623) by the villagers.

The family estate was founded in 1953 by Jean-Louis Ferran and his son Daniel and Jean-Pierre, now joined by Gilles. The vineyards stretches 40 hectares in Rasteau clay and limestone slopes,
terraced hills, with soils of red and yellow clays overcome surface rollers. Tillage or weed, minimalist use of treatment products, optimization of leaf area, manual harvesting, southeast-facing and 25 hectares on neighboring soils of Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and St-Roman.

The vines are grown old with plowing and organic fertilizer. The vineyards are manually harvested and sorted by hand. The grapes are then destemmed, vinified and aged in the semi-underground cellar, the highest of Rasteau in the heart of the vineyard.

Their wine degustation is one of the best I ever had, the selections were impressive and my favorite is their Calendal and heritage 1924.
