Basilica di Santa Maria presso San Satiro - Milan, Italy

Santa Maria presso San Satiro is a church in Milan. The Italian Renaissance structure houses the early-medieval shrine to Satyrus, brother of Saint Ambrose. The church is known for its false apse, an early example of trompe l'Å“il, attributed to Donato Bramante.A beautiful example of Renaissance church with an amazing trompe l'oeil by Bramante who expertly created a false apse. Inside the church is the beautiful renaissance sacristy also built by Bramante and on the other side the Sacellum or Chapel of San Satiro, the only remaining part of the old church dating from the 9th century and aiming to resemble the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The Grand Illusion - The expansion of the church required space behind the altar where there was only 91cm. The area was transformed by architect Donato Bramante using trompe d’ oeil that gave the optical illusion the space was 10m - an increase of 10x. The amazing skill and artistry is not something to be missed.
