Arco Della Costa - Verona, Italy

The Arch of the Coast owes its name to a whalebone or perhaps to ittiosaurus that for centuries hangs below it. You do not know why it has been hanged there and, despite the various theories and interpretations, remains a mystery. The shore of Piazza delle Erbe is in its position at least since the XVII century. There is in fact a representation of a view of Piazza delle Erbe where the rib below its arch appears. But it could have been there too long ago. According to some it is a sort of relic carried by the Holy Land from the Crusaders of Verona and hanging under a bow of Piazza delle Erbe at ex-vote. According to others it might be a primitive advertisement for the old pharmacy that is still below it. Others still think it could be a fossil, perhaps found on the mountains around Verona and, believed in a bone of some mysterious monster, placed in the center of Verona almost as a scornful city. There are two other similar bones in the Verona Cathedral and a side chapel in the church of Santa Anastasia. The Arco della Costa, is a connecting bridge between the Domus Nova and the Palazzo della Ragione and the Venetian era allowed the judges to travel from their residence, the Domus Nova fact, the City Court, Palazzo della Ragione, without having go to the street, where they could be approached by corrupt or ill-intentioned. The Arch of the Coast owes its name to a whale rib that hangs in there for centuries. Arco della Costa hangs a whale rib beneath the arches. It is said that people walking under the arches would marry the arches if the married virgins. If the person is upright, the whale ribs will fall, of course. That's impossible!
