Szechenyi Spa Baths in Budapest is one of the best and largest spa baths in Europe with its 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor pools. It located in the biggest green park of Budapest, in the City Park, close to the metro station. The Neo-baroque palace was specifically built for hosting Szechenyi Baths as Budapest the City of Baths for many centuries: starting with the Roman settlers who built the first spa baths, through the 16th century Turkish occupiers who built many of the famous Turkish baths in Budapest to the 19-20th century natural medical trends that promote aqua therapies and their healing effects. The beautiful yellow building of the spa baths is the design of Gyozo Czigler (Győző Czigler) who started to build Szechenyi Furdo in May 1909. One of the largest bathing complexes in Europe, the premier medicinal bath of Pest- Its thermal springs were discovered in 1879; they are the deepest and hottest ( 74 - 75 C. ) thermal wells in the capital. The neo - Baroque baths were built in1913, the swimming pool in 1927. The open - air sections with their pleasantly warm waters are equally popular in winter.
Procedure is quite straight forward, purchase day ticket and cabin or locker. I paid with Visa card.
Towel and robe can be rent within the locker area uses cash and they refund the deposit when you return the towels after usage.
I opted for the cabin as I wanted space to change and keep all my belongings. If you travel with luggage, I suggest take a cabin to store your luggage. The cabin and locker are coed.
I went during December, it was extremely cold weather even the outdoor ground was icy. The thermal water in the outdoor pool was not warm enough to withstand the cold weather.
My advise is not to visit during winter. Lesson learnt for my case.
Bring a robe if necessary and slippers.
