Catedral de Mérida - Merida, Yucatan, Mexico

The Mérida Cathedral in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, is one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. This church sits in front of one of the main squares of Merida, the site of all kinds of social events.The beautiful and imposing exterior gives way to an austere interior. Massive columns dominate the nave and center aisle leading to the altar. Supposedly, the ornamentation was stripped from the church during the revolution. It is perhaps the most plain church I've seen in Mexico. Pictures by MSW
